Jeb Barrett is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech. He is interested in how long-term climate trends affect ecological processes. Research in the Barrett Lab addresses the influences of soils, climate variability, hydrology, and biodiversity on biogeochemical cycling from the scale of microorganisms to regional landscapes.

Dr. Barrett is part of a group of scientists who conduct research under the NSF-funded Long-term Ecological Research Network in Antarctica. He studies the mechanisms that control the spatial distribution of bacteria, fungi, and roundworms in the dry valleys of Antarctica. He is interested in how these microbial systems work under natural conditions as well as under the changes brought about by climate change.
