For the past 4 years, Kristin Rose Jutras has been the Communications & Creative Services Director at the Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech. She leads a team of science writers, graphic designers, videographers and is responsible for developing strategic marketing plans, press releases, videos, and magazines. Kristin has over 15 years experience in Science Communications, Marketing, and Publishing. She attended Stanford University and received a B.A. in English Literature & Communications with a minor in Biological Sciences.
After college, she worked in science publishing at Pearson Education and The New York Times Digital, then delved into microbiology and neurogenetics research at Yale University. Kristin received her M.F.A. in Fiction, Poetry, and Communications from Fairfield University. She has experience in freelance journalism, photography, and video; travel writing; science writing; and taught English Literature and Communications at Fairfield University for 4 years.
Alex Crookshanks (he/him)

Alex Crookshanks double-majored in Graphic Design and Studio Art with a minor in Art History at Concord University. After college, he worked as a photographer, sign designer, package designer, and creative director throughout West Virginia and Virginia. Alex has experience in freelance branding and design, photography, illustration, and has been an adjuct professor of branding, design, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop at Bluefield College.
Alex has been with Virginia Tech for over 5 years. For the last 2 years he has served as the Visual Communications Manager at the Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech. He handles all branding, design, and visual communications via websites, magazines, digital signage, marketing materials, and social media.
Kendall Daniels (she/her)

Kendall Daniels graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.A. in Professional and Technical Writing and a minor in Medicine and Society in 2019. During her senior year of college, she got her first taste of research and science communication as an intern at the Center for Communicating Science and the former Fralin Life Science Institute at Virginia Tech. For the past 2 years, Kendall has been writing and editing press releases, creating social media content, and taking photography and videography for the Fralin Life Sciences Institute. When she is not writing about the fascinating world of research, you can find Kendall playing video games, making art, or going sightseeing in Virginia and its border states. In Fall 2021, Kendall will begin an online program for a Master of Arts in Science Writing at Johns Hopkins University.
Tyler Harris (he/him)
Tyler Harris is a rising senior at Virginia Tech, seeking a dual degree in multimedia journalism and environmental conservation and society. Since September of 2020, he has been working as a communications intern for the Fralin Life Sciences Institute. Working with the communications team, Tyler has written press releases, created social media content, and contributed to the Fralin Explorer magazine. Outside of his work, he is an avid nature and landscape photographer with a particular interest in wildlife. Tyler plans to graduate in the spring of 2022 and enter a career in environmental journalism.
