Center for Ecosystem Forecasting welcomes John Zobitz, a leader in environmental data/forecasting education

John Zobitz, standing, speaks to students in a classroom setting at Virginia Tech.

The Virginia Tech Center for Ecosystem Forecasting, Academy of Data Science, and the Department of Biological Sciences' Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior (EEB) seminar series, co-sponsored the visit of John Zobitz from Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN to Virginia Tech on February 12.

In the morning, Zobitz gave an open-invitation technical talk/tutorial on “Engineering Soil Flux Targets for NEON Forecasting Challenges” to graduate students, followed by a lunch meeting with early career researchers.

In the afternoon, Zobitz gave a presentation “Opening the Black Box: Continental-Scale Forecasts of Soil Carbon Fluxes” in Steger Auditorium as a part of the EEB seminar series. His talk detailed current insights gained from applying and forecasting soil fluxes using a range of modeling approaches across a continental-scale network, with an emphasis on how these approaches advance the understanding of soil carbon dynamics.

A reception sponsored by the Center for Ecosystem Forecasting followed.

A group of people at Virginia Tech gather for a receptiuon following a talk by John Zobitz in Steger Hall.
