New Users Start Here
Have a potential confocal project? Start here!
For new users, the policy of the facility is to start with a brief meeting with the facility manager to discuss the project and the goals for microscopy imaging. The discussion will include the following considerations:
- Nature and preparation of the sample(s)
- Sample size and thickness
- How the sample will be mounted for viewing (e.g., slide, dish)
- Excitation/emission spectra of the fluorescent labels
- Imaging mode (e.g., single slice, z-stack, time-lapse imaging)
- Image magnification and resolution
- Biosafety concerns
- Timeline to begin imaging
Training
Training follows the discussion of research plans. The discussion can occur at any time, but the training is scheduled when the researcher is nearly ready to begin imaging experiments.
- Training is individual with two sessions spread over 2 days
- Training covers instrument operation and image acquisition
- Cost for training is the standard billing rate for the use of the microscope
Rates
- All usage fees support the confocal facility
- Standard billing rate is $38 per hour, with a 1-hour minimum charge; after the first hour, $9.50 per quarter hour
- No additional charge for imaging assistance
- External use rates are available
Publications and Acknowledgements
Users of the Fralin Imaging Center are asked to acknowledge the facility in formal publications and presentations that include data generated in the facility.
