Synopsis:

Dr. Caroline Leeth's lab focuses on the study of the adaptive immune response in health as well as human and equine disease states.

Description:

Dr. Leeth is a cellular and molecular immunologist with extensive training in the use of mouse models. Her laboratory focuses on the understanding of immunological pathways in health and disease. They use mouse models to dissect the complex pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Currently, their focus is on understanding B lymphocyte pathology in these diseases in an effort to better target these cells therapeutically. Dr. Leeth also works to understand basic immunology in the horse, as well as understanding the pathology of equine protozoal myeloencepahlitis, caused by Sarcocystis neurona. For the lab's equine studies, they work with horses as well as use mouse models. Currently they are working to develop mouse xenograft models to better study infectious disease in the horse, in addition to continuing their work in SLE and type 1 diabetes.
