Synopsis:

The Drake Lab investigates mitochondrial quality control in the context of aging, primarily in post-mitotic tissues (e.g. skeletal muscle).

Description:

Dr. Drake's research focuses on how mitochondrial quality control in primarily post-mitotic tissues (e.g. skeletal muscle) mediates the capacity for healthy aging. Specifically, his lab is particularly interested in mechanisms by which damaged and/or dysfunctional regions of the mitochondrial reticulum are targeted for degradation through mitophagy and how such mechanisms are negatively impacted by aging and their relationship to age-related disease. Additionally, the Drake Lab is interested in how regular non-pathological energetic stress (e.g. exercise, dietary manipulation) promotes healthy aging through maintenance of mitochondrial quality.
