November 2023 Inside the Institute Newsletter

A Message from Rob McCarley
Executive Director, The Fralin Life Sciences Institute

This time of year makes me think about the people and outcomes I am thankful for and how the year’s events have shaped those outcomes in the context of expected and unexpected forces. The Institute is fortunate to have such an amazing community of folks whose dedication to helping guide our mission is borne out by their efforts, creativity, and thoughtfulness.

During our recent Fralin Friday event I hosted, I heard the consistent message from our stakeholders that they are amazed by the diversity of basic and applied studies, outreach, and learning endeavors our community is tackling head on.

This month’s newsletter provides further evidence of this wide-spanning pathway for improving the human condition by supporting innovative research, education, and engagement at the interfaces of life sciences disciplines. You will see that steadfast approaches and historically strong programs underpin the Institute’s capabilities, which are continuously strengthened by new people, ideas, and opportunities.

Reflecting on our accomplishments while planning for creative new activities not only reminds us of what we are appreciative of, but these pensive moments help re-center us so we can imagine how we may be able to make broader impact by using our strengths in new ways.

As the Institute continues to focus on avenues to help launch the community to unprecedented research destinations, we realize how fortunate we are to have such a broad-reaching, successful community guiding us via their view of what is ahead.

Let’s go Hokies, and let’s go FLSI!

Global change interdisciplinary Ph.D. program trains the next generation of leaders

In December, Fralin Life Sciences offered a version of "Kids' Tech University communicated entirely in Spanish. Families from the area participated in STEM activities and demonstrations and Virginia Tech students who speak Spanish volunteered their time.
